Most public-domain mistakes happen when a creator uses a classic name but copies a later protected version.

  1. Identify the original source, not just a modern adaptation.
  2. Check publication date and jurisdiction.
  3. Separate text, character, visual design, music, translation, and trademark risk.
  4. Create original art and wording where possible.
  5. Document sources before publishing.
